Area Guide to Wimborne and the surrounding area

Wimborne Minster or simply “Wimborne” as it is known locally is a vibrant and historic market town lying on the River Stour. The town is set around the famous Wimborne Minster with its traditional square and High Street providing an array of local shops, High Street names including Waitrose, together with a number of traditional and modern cafes, restaurants and inns. There are stunning walks along the River Stour, Kingston Lacy & Badbury Rings. Wimborne is also famous for The Tivoli a 1930s art deco cinema and theatre.

It is served by excellent road connections to the A31 to Ringwood & The New Forest, the City of Southampton then onto the M27 & M3. A few miles to the south is the coast with the stunning resorts of Bournemouth, Poole and charming Christchurch. Mainline train stations to London Waterloo can be found at Poole & Bournemouth.


CANFORD MAGNA

The village is situated just south of the River Stour and lies in between the towns of Wimborne Minster and Poole. The village is the site for a large boarding and co-education school which was previously the mansion and estate of Lord Wimborne. The school offers a range of facilities open to the general public including fitness centre, indoor swimming pool and dance studios. There is a 9 hole golf course within the grounds and Canford boasts one of only two Real Tennis courts currently in schools in the UK.

The Layard Theatre, is a modern theatre providing a venue for a wide range of professional entertainment including top quality drama, music and dance.


COLEHILL

Colehill is an elevated area on the outskirts of Wimborne Minster (approx 1.5 miles). Many of the houses enjoy wonderful views over the surrounding countryside. There is a wonderful community spirit with Schools, Library, Convenience Store and local businesses. Colehill is also on a bus route.


CORFE MULLEN

Approximately 2.5 miles from Wimborne Minster, Corfe Mullen is surrounded by wonderful countryside and has many Churches, Public Houses, Schools, Library and various shops and local businesses. It has a whole host of community and sports organizations which help to preserve its community spirit and identity.

Corfe Mullen enjoys good access to Broadstone, Poole & Bournemouth and the A31.


MERLEY & OAKLEY

Merley & Oakley are popular locations approximately 2 miles from Wimborne Minster. There is a variety of accommodation with cottages on the outskirts and more modern housing providing 2, 3 & 4 Bedrooms. The area provides many facilities including Primary School, church, local butcher, convenience store and a popular public house. You can walk to the impressive village of Canford Magna and it has easy access onto the A31.

Wimborne Minster is so lucky to be surrounded by beautiful Dorset Countryside with an array of stunning and traditional villages and Hamlets. There are so many to mention but it is worth taking a leisurely drive being tempted to visit one of the lovely public houses to discuss your findings. Gaunts Common, Holt, Witchampton, Furzehill, Pamphill, The Kingston Lacy Estate, The Tarrants and so many more to explore.
